From an improvised opera performance welcoming foreign envoys in the late 18th century to today's large-scale cultural festivals on the beach, the city's waterfront continues to evolve as a vibrant meeting point between Vietnam and the world.
From historic encounters to modern cultural stages
The latest chapter in this story unfolded in July 2026, when the Bien Dong Park transformed into a colorful cultural arena during the Vietnam-Japan Festival 2026 in Da Nang.
For four days, the city's beachfront became a lively gathering place where Vietnamese and Japanese traditions blended naturally through music, martial arts, dance, cuisine and tourism.
Visitors experienced an unusual combination of performances and activities: Vietnam's bamboo dance alongside Japan's Bon Odori, Vovinam demonstrations paired with Japanese Judo, baseball experiences, and concerts featuring both Vietnamese pop and Japanese J-pop artists.
Nearly 100 exhibition booths showcased the culture, food, tourism products and creative industries of both countries, highlighting how cultural diplomacy increasingly extends beyond official meetings into public spaces where communities can interact directly.
Held annually since 2014, this festival has become one of Vietnam's most significant bilateral cultural exchange events. More importantly, it reflects the city's long-term strategy of using culture as a bridge for international cooperation while enriching its tourism appeal.
Yet this contemporary festival is only one expression of Da Nang's evolving cultural landscape. The city's beaches have gradually become open-air stages capable of hosting international artistic exchanges that are both accessible and memorable.
This vision has inspired new ideas for the future. During a cultural industries workshop in late 2025, Professor Kang Hyun-jong of South Korea's Yuhan University proposed creating the world's first interactive beachfront media art park at the world-renowned My Khe Beach.
His concept would combine artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology and Vietnamese mythology, using the Marble Mountains as a natural backdrop for immersive three-dimensional nighttime performances.
Coastal cultural meeting points through time
Historical records suggest that one of the earliest documented international cultural exchanges on the city's shoreline took place in the late 18th century, when the British Macartney Mission stopped at Tourane - today's Da Nang - on its journey to China.
In his travel account A Voyage to Cochinchina, British diplomat John Barrow described how local officials welcomed the delegation with a public celebration near the beach.
Guests were escorted to a temporary pavilion, while nearby performers staged a traditional Vietnamese opera. British musicians also presented European melodies, although local audiences, unfamiliar with Western orchestral music, found the sounds quite different from their own musical traditions.
The encounter revealed an early willingness to engage through culture, despite linguistic and cultural barriers.
In recent years, the city has continued building upon that tradition. International artists have regularly chosen Da Nang as a performance destination.
Nearly a decade ago, South Korean performing groups Sachoom, Bibap and World Music Assemble One shared the stage with artists from Da Nang Tuong Theatre at the Bien Dong Park, creating another memorable example of cross-cultural collaboration.
More recently, in September 2025, the façade of the 120-year-old former City Hall - now the Museum of Da Nang - was transformed into an outdoor concert venue during the "Da Nang – Connecting the Future" performance, demonstrating how historic architecture can become part of contemporary cultural storytelling.
Today, Da Nang is steadily establishing itself as a dynamic cultural gateway in Central Vietnam. By blending centuries-old heritage with contemporary creativity and international collaboration, the city is creating distinctive cultural experiences that resonate with both residents and visitors.
Along its coastline, cultural festivals, artistic performances and international exchanges have become powerful symbols of openness and friendship.
