Da Nang Party Secretary receives Nobel laureate economist Paul Romer

DNO - Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee Le Ngoc Quang, on Tuesday, warmly received Professor Paul Romer, an American economist and recipient of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, during his visit to attend the ongoing Da Nang Business, Finance and Technology Week 2026.

Also attending the reception were Standing Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Ho Ky Minh, along with representatives of municipal departments and agencies.

At the meeting, Professor Paul Romer expressed his admiration for Da Nang's development orientation and shared a number of recommendations regarding growth models.

He stressed the need for the city to support industries capable of generating high returns for the entire economy in addition to attracting investment and high-quality human resources to technology sectors.

Citing the successes of economies such as South Korea and China, Professor Paul Romer emphasized the role of the “learning on the job” model.

According to him, the model enables workers to continuously improve their skills and productivity, thereby creating a foundation for job creation, higher incomes and more inclusive economic growth as well as narrowing development gaps between regions.

Professor Romer suggested that Da Nang's development strategy pursue high-tech advancement in parallel with improvements in labor productivity on a large scale.

For his part, Secretary Le Ngoc Quang thanked Professor Paul Romer for his valuable insights and recommendations regarding the city’s development direction.

He said that the city's leaders and professional agencies highly appreciated Professor Romer’s speech delivered earlier the same day, noting that many of his views aligned with Da Nang’s current development strategy.

The city Party chief reaffirmed that Da Nang will continue prioritizing industries and sectors that create employment opportunities, improve people's living standards and ensure social welfare in line with the city’s planning orientation.

Also, emphasis will be placed on building a harmonious economic ecosystem that balances short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals to create a foundation for sustainable growth, he added.

On behalf of the city's leaders, Secretary Le Ngoc Quang wished Professor Paul Romer a productive working time and an enjoyable experience in Da Nang.
