DNO - Rooted in the beliefs of generations of fishermen, the recent Son Tra Whale Worship Festival honors Ca Ong (Lord Whale) in local folklore that is revered as a guardian spirit believed to protect sailors and guide them safely through rough seas.

Being held at the Van Dong Hiep Whale Temple in April, the festival brought together local residents, cultural practitioners and visitors in a celebration of faith, gratitude and community spirit.

As the festival began, the atmosphere transformed with the scent of incense, the rhythm of ceremonial drums and the colorful procession of traditional rituals.

Sacred ceremonies such as the God-Inviting Ritual, the Souls Worship Ceremony and the Main Whale Worship Offering reflected the enduring connection between local people and the sea that has sustained them for generations.

The event offered visitors an immersive cultural experience. Traditional Bai Choi folk singing, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, filled the festival grounds with lively melodies.

Performances of Tuong classical theatre and Ba Trao chanting vividly recreated the maritime traditions of central Vietnam, while beach volleyball tournaments and community activities bring together people of all ages.

For international visitors seeking authentic experiences, the Son Tra Whale Worship Festival provided a rare opportunity to witness a living cultural tradition that remains deeply woven into everyday life.

Unlike staged tourist performances, the festival was a genuine expression of local identity, where centuries-old customs continue to thrive in a rapidly modernizing city.

The festival also highlights another side of Da Nang, a destination where cultural heritage coexists harmoniously with modern tourism development.

Visitors could combine the festival experience with trips to My Khe Beach, Son Tra Peninsula, Linh Ung Pagoda and the city’s renowned culinary scene.
