Beginning construction in 2015, Terminal T2 was put into operation on May 19, 2017 to serve the APEC 2017 Economic Leaders’ Week.

According to operational data from 2019, Terminal T2 handled over 7.1 million passengers, exceeding its original design capacity of four million passengers by 79%.

Most recently, passenger numbers remained high in 2024 and 2025, reaching 6.18 million and 6.81 million passengers respectively.

Given this situation, the expansion project is not only an urgent solution to increase handling capacity and ensure operational safety but also a crucial step in realizing AHT's vision of pioneering an international-standard service ecosystem while maintaining its Skytrax 5-star recognition.

The nearly VND 1.5 trillion project will be developed on an area of 3,600m², bringing the terminal’s total usable land area after expansion to approximately 21,085m².

Specifically, the check-in area will be significantly expanded, with the number of check-in counters increasing from 54 to 85, and 31 new service positions added.

Notably, the aircraft boarding capacity will be significantly optimized as the number of jet bridge departure gates will be increased from four to seven. This will help minimize the need for passengers to travel by shuttle buses in unfavorable weather conditions.

In term of technical infrastructure, the project will feature a new generation baggage handling system (BHS), as well as increase capacity from two to four baggage conveyor belts for departures and from four to six baggage conveyor belts for arrivals.

Additionally, an air-conditioning system using inverter technology and variable air volume (VAV) control will help save energy while ensuring an optimal indoor climate throughout the terminal.

The project is expected to be completed and put into operation with a total design capacity of six million passengers annually, meeting tourism growth demands during the 2026 - 2030 period.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Le Quang Nam emphasized that the project has special significance for the future development of the city’s aviation infrastructure, tourism sector, and external economic activities.

He also emphasized the necessity of the project in meeting the strong growth demand of the international aviation market, enhance operational capacity, strengthen global connectivity, and at the same time create new development opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and high-quality services.

He added the project is not merely an airport terminal expansion but also a strategic step toward transforming Da Nang into an international tourism, service, and trade hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Simultaneously, it aims to build the image of a modern gateway that reflects Vietnam’s cultural identity.

In the long term, the project forms part of the broader aviation infrastructure development strategy for Da Nang and the central region, under which Da Nang International Airport and Chu Lai Airport are expected to establish an integrated aviation ecosystem, leveraging the unique strengths of each airport.
