“Stand banh mi” trend goes viral on TikTok

For over a week, thousands of international TikTok users have joined the trend by remixing the famous song “Stand by Me” by American musician Ben E. King into “Stand banh mi” - a humorous phrase referring to the experience of standing on the sidewalk enjoying a Vietnamese banh mi.

The trend has rapidly spread across global social media platforms, inspiring foreign visitors to seek out Vietnam’s iconic sandwich.

Most viral clips are remarkably simple, showing travelers holding a hot, crispy loaf of banh mi, taking a bite, and moving along to the music. This simplicity attracts millions of views and enthusiastic responses from both international and Vietnamese netizens.

Aliyah, 20, a British national, flew to Da Nang in late April. Her first stop was a roast pork banh mi shop tucked inside a small alleyway. She said her trip to Vietnam was inspired by TikTok videos featuring diners dancing along to the reworked “Stand banh mi” version of the song.

“My boyfriend can eat up to ten banh mi a day just trying different fillings” she added. Videos documenting her street-side banh mi experiences in Vietnam have garnered hundreds of thousands of views online.

From popular street food to global culinary icon

In recent years, alongside pho, banh mi has become one of the most sought-after dishes among international visitors to Vietnam.

With its crispy crust and a variety of toppings such as pate, cold cuts, fried eggs, grilled meat, fish cakes, herbs, and pickled vegetables, this dish has easily won over food lovers worldwide.

Beyond travel videos, banh mi is frequently featured in online discussions about Vietnamese cuisine.

A Facebook group “Vietnamese Banh Mi Appreciation Society” with more than 200,000 members has even been created solely to celebrate Vietnamese banh mi.

Experts in the tourism and F&B industries believe the “Stand banh mi” phenomenon highlights the power of food in promoting destinations.

Trends such as “Vietnam is calling”, “Vietnam haul” and “Stand banh mi” reflect a growing desire among international travelers to seek authentic local experiences rather than simply checking in at famous tourist attractions.

From a cultural perspective, Vietnamese banh mi continues to strengthen its place on the global culinary map. Although originally inspired by the French baguette, the dish has been extensively localized and transformed into a uniquely Vietnamese creation.

International recognition came on March 24, 2011, when the term “banh mi” was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary. The dictionary defines it as “a Vietnamese snack consisting of a baguette (typically made from both wheat and rice flour) filled with various ingredients, typically including meat, pickled vegetables, and chili peppers”.

Meanwhile, the Cambridge Dictionary offers a shorter definition, describing banh mi as “a long sandwich that is popular in Vietnam”.

These definitions reinforce the global perception of banh mi as a sandwich deeply rooted in Vietnamese identity.

Besides captivating many diners, banh mi is also frequently ranked among the best dishes in the region and the world.

Earlier this April, banh mi with roasted pork was included in a list of the top 100 best dishes in Southeast Asia by Taste Atlas based on reviews from international diners.

In a list of the world’s 25 best sandwiches updated by CNN in April 2026, Vietnamese banh mi ranked third and was praised as a unique and attractive symbol of cultural exchange.
