Vietnam tourism hits historic twin milestones in foreign arrivals

8.8 million international visitors in four months

According to the latest data released by the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the country welcomed 2.03 million international visitors in April 2026, marking the fourth consecutive month that foreign arrivals exceeded the two-million mark, a first in Vietnam’s tourism history.

In total, Vietnam received 8.8 million international visitors during the first four months of 2026, up 14.6% year-on-year and equivalent to 35% of the country’s annual target of 25 million foreign arrivals.

The figures highlight the strong momentum of Vietnam’s post-pandemic tourism recovery and position the country as one of Southeast Asia’s standout performers in 2026.

Regional growth bright spot

While several regional tourism markets continue to recover unevenly, Vietnam is emerging as one of the fastest-growing destinations in Southeast Asia.

Thailand remains the region’s largest tourism market, attracting 11.3 million foreign visitors in the first four months of 2026. However, that figure represents a 3.4% decline compared to the same period in 2025.

Meanwhile, Singapore recorded 4.4 million visitors in the first quarter, up 2.8%, while Indonesia welcomed 3.51 million tourists and the Philippines received 1.83 million.

Against that backdrop, Vietnam’s double-digit growth stands out, particularly as the global travel industry continues to face economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions that are affecting transport costs and consumer confidence.

Industry observers say Vietnam’s performance reflects a combination of more relaxed visa policies, improved international air connectivity and the country’s growing reputation as a safe and affordable destination.

With visitor numbers continuing to climb, Vietnam is increasingly positioning itself as a leading tourism hub in the Asia-Pacific region, benefiting from shifting travel patterns, competitive pricing and strong regional connectivity.

The top 10 source markets for Vietnam in the first four months of 2026 were China, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan (China) Cambodia, the United States, India, Japan, Australia and the Philippines.

Together, these markets accounted for 72% of all international arrivals, with China and South Korea alone contributing nearly 40%.
