Da Nang City breaks ground on Lien Chieu container port project
DNO - The Da Nang People’s Committee, in coordination with an investor consortium including Hateco Group, Hateco Seaport Co., Ltd., and APM Terminals B.V., held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Lien Chieu container port project on April 25.

The event was attended by senior central and local officials, including Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc, as well as representatives of international partners such as EU delegations and European business associations.
A gateway to global logistics chains
At the ceremony, Pham Gia Tuc said that Da Nang is a major socio-economic hub of central Vietnam, benefiting from a range of special mechanisms and policies to drive breakthrough development.
With a total investment of over VND 45 trillion, the Lien Chieu port project has been included in the list of strategic investment projects, enjoying preferential policies on taxation, land use, and streamlined administrative procedures.
The government has also approved central budget funding for shared infrastructure in Phase 1, laying the foundation for broader investment in port development in the Lien Chieu area.
The project combines domestic resources with world-class port operation expertise, providing a strong basis for long-term success.
Authorities called on the city to continue facilitating implementation, promptly addressing obstacles, and ensuring that special mechanisms are effectively applied.

The city has been tasked with accelerating the development of shared infrastructure and transport links connecting the port with functional zones, the free trade zone, and multimodal transport systems, including road, rail, inland waterways, and aviation.
Strategic breakthrough for Da Nang
According to Nguyen Manh Hung, Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee, the Lien Chieu container port is not only a major infrastructure project but also a strategic breakthrough lever to complete Da Nang’s modern logistics ecosystem, reduce transportation costs, and expand sustainable urban development space.
The port is designed to accommodate container vessels of up to 200,000 DWT, reinforcing Da Nang’s position as an international gateway.

The project is expected to develop as a green and smart port capable of competing with leading global seaports. The city has committed to supporting investors by streamlining administrative procedures and ensuring favourable conditions throughout implementation.
Large-scale modern port system
Approved with a total investment of nearly USD 2 billion, the project will cover 172.6 hectares (excluding shared water areas and navigation channels). It will include eight container berths with a total quay length of approximately 2,750 metres, capable of handling vessels up to 18,000 TEU.

In addition, the project will feature barge berths for vessels up to 5,000 tonnes to facilitate cargo consolidation and distribution via inland waterways, helping ease pressure on road transport and optimise logistics costs.
The port’s hinterland infrastructure will be developed in sync, including warehouses, operations centres, repair facilities, rail yards, and a 1.5-kilometre rail connection to Lien Chieu station, forming a closed logistics chain.

Strategically located along international shipping routes and serving as the eastern terminus of the East-West Economic Corridor, the Lien Chieu container port is expected to play a key role in integrating Vietnam more deeply into regional and global supply chains.
