“Vietnam’s Intersection” photo exhibition opens in Da Nang
DNO - The “Vietnam’s Intersection” exhibition, first showcased at Photo Hanoi Biennale 2025, is now on tour across Vietnam, with its first stop at the Museum of Da Nang from April 17 to May 17, 2026.
The event is organized by the Institut Français au Vietnam in collaboration with the museum.
Bringing together works by three French photographers - Daniel Roussel, Gilbert Bertrand and Lily Franey - the exhibition offers a rare and heartfelt visual journey through different periods of Vietnam’s history.
Daniel Roussel’s photographs, taken between 1980 and 1986, provide an intimate glimpse into everyday life in Vietnam.
As a correspondent for the French daily L’Humanité, Roussel documented ordinary moments with warmth and respect, capturing the resilience and quiet strength of the Vietnamese people.
His work, combined with his writing and documentary filmmaking, forms a valuable archive that reflects a nation moving forward with strong determination.
Meanwhile, the black-and-white images by Gilbert Bertrand take visitors further back, to the years 1970 - 1975. While working at French cultural centers in Da Lat and Saigon, Bertrand developed a deep passion for photography.
Though not a professional photographer at the time, his keen eye allowed him to document significant historical moments.
These images, only recently brought to light, now stand as powerful visual testimonies of a transformative era.
Completing the exhibition are the evocative works of Lily Franey, created from 1987 during her missions in Vietnam with Secours populaire français. Her photographs portray simple yet hope-filled scenes in Vietnam.
Through a deeply humanistic lens, she infuses her work with warmth and subtlety, offering a vivid and authentic depiction of the resilience and everyday life of the Vietnamese people during the period of reconstruction and renewal.
More than a collection of photographs, “Vietnam’s Intersection” is an invitation to reflect, connect and rediscover.
