“Vietnam is where my daughter spent her final days surrounded by love. If we can give something back to this country, it would be incredibly meaningful to our family” the girl’s father shared on Wednesday when speaking about their decision to donate his daughter's organs to save others.

Her mother also expressed deep gratitude to the doctors who stood by their daughter in her final moments. She described the donation as a way for the family to thank Vietnam where their daughter had “enjoyed some of the most wonderful moments of her life”.

Earlier, the 19-year-old British national, identified as O.S.W., had traveled to Vietnam after graduating from high school. A serious traffic accident left her with critical injuries. Despite doctors’ best efforts, the medical council at the Viet Duc University Hospital confirmed she was brain-dead on April 2.

Upon arriving in Vietnam, her parents had proactively expressed their wish to donate her organs. From this donation, doctors performed a liver transplant for a 53-year-old man suffering from end-stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B and cirrhosis. Two kidneys were also transplanted into a 35-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, both of whom had endured years of dialysis.

The family affirmed that, if given the choice, their daughter would have chosen to give life to others. They found comfort in believing that a part of her lives on, continuing in harmony with a country she once loved.

Doctors at the Viet Duc University Hospital, who carried out the transplants, not only fulfilled their professional duties but also witnessed something extraordinary where grief is transformed into hope, and loss becomes the beginning of new life.

A young life was cut tragically short. Yet from that loss, three others have been given a second chance. What remains is not only a series of successful transplants, but also a profound story of compassion that transcends all boundaries in the shared human desire to preserve life.
