October 1 officially designated as International Coffee Day under UN resolution
DNO - The adoption of a resolution designating International Coffee Day by the United Nations General Assembly holds special significance for Vietnam, one of the world’s leading coffee producers and exporters.

On March 10 in New York, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/Res/80/249, designating October 1 each year as “International Coffee Day”.
The initiative aims to raise global awareness of the economic, social and cultural significance of coffee, as well as the sector’s role in advancing sustainable development.
It was proposed by Brazil together with a core group of 18 countries, including Vietnam, and received co-sponsorship from 97 UN member states – the highest level of support among draft resolutions considered at the current session.
This broad support reflects the international community’s strong recognition of the coffee sector’s role in promoting socio-economic development and sustainable livelihoods for millions of people worldwide.
The resolution highlights that coffee is not only a key agricultural commodity but also carries profound cultural and social values, closely tied to the traditions and daily lives of many nations. The global coffee sector plays a vital role in sustaining the livelihoods of millions of households, particularly smallholder farmers, while generating significant revenue for many developing countries.
It also acknowledges the contribution of the global coffee value chain to economic growth, sustainable job creation, poverty reduction, food security, gender equality and the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The adoption of the resolution on International Coffee Day is especially meaningful for Vietnam, one of the world’s leading coffee producers and exporters.
As a member of the core group that developed the resolution, Vietnam actively coordinated with countries and international partners to advance the initiative, helping raise global awareness of the coffee sector’s role, promote international cooperation in building a sustainable coffee value chain, and showcase the image and value of Vietnamese coffee worldwide.
The resolution is expected to encourage governments, international organizations and stakeholders to deepen cooperation in supporting coffee-growing communities and fostering innovation in the sector.
