Da Nang - Canada cooperation on climate adaptation
DNO - On March 11, Vice Chairman of the Da Nang City People’s Committee Phan Thai Binh received a delegation from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), managers of the “Vietnamese cities resilient to climate change” project.
Judith Clara Varga-Toth, project manager, said the initiative offers an opportunity for experts and local authorities from both countries to exchange experience in urban management and climate-resilient development.
The Canadian delegation, including experts from six Canadian cities, also sought to learn about Vietnamese initiatives in landslide prevention, plastic waste management, and gender equality in urban development.
Vice Chairman Phan Thai Binh noted that Da Nang is highly vulnerable to climate change, particularly storms, flooding, and landslides in mountainous areas, which affect residents’ lives and socio-economic development.
The city has been implementing measures to enhance climate resilience with support from the central government, scientists, and international experts.
The project “Vietnamese cities resilient to climate change” will run from 2026 to 2030 in four localities: Quang Ninh, Dong Thap, Lam Dong, and Da Nang. It aims to strengthen cities’ capacity to adapt to climate change through improved management of drainage systems, green spaces, public areas, and urban waste, while supporting sustainable urban development planning.
