Da Nang’s allure through the eyes of French retirees
DNO - A tropical climate, coastal scenery, affordable cost of living, and relatively well-developed urban services are making Da Nang an increasing popular choice for French retirees seeking a change of living environment.

The French lifestyle magazine Grazia on February 20 ran an article describing Vietnam’s Da Nang as an emerging destination for French retirees thanks to its affordable cost of living and favourable seaside living environment.
The article noted that while Portugal and Morocco were previously often mentioned as top choices for French retirees wanting to live abroad, Da Nang is now gradually attracting attention, being likened to the “Miami of Asia”.
This coastal city in Vietnam does not bear the hallmarks of a bustling metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City or Ha Noi. Instead, it offers a tranquil seaside atmosphere, with beautiful beaches such as My Khe, scenic coastal promenades, and green hills in the surrounding areas. The pace of life here is described as unhurried, well suited to those seeking relaxation after many years of work.
The article emphasizes that housing costs are among Da Nang’s most compelling attractions. Monthly rents for a one-bedroom apartment near the beach or the city center range from just 300 to 600 euros (US$350 - 700). Two-bedroom houses or apartments typically cost between 500 and 900 euros per month. Grazia magaazine notes that these prices are significantly lower than in many destinations traditionally favored by Western retirees.
Beyond housing, the cost of food and living expenses in Da Nang is also considered reasonable. A local meal featuring noodles, seafood, or fresh produce costs only a few euros. Traditional markets offer a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, fish, and spices at prices that are highly competitive compared with those in many Western cities.
The transportation system is praised for its convenience and low cost, with taxis, two-wheeled vehicles, and local buses available at affordable rates. In many areas, residents can walk or use motorbikes to get around, contributing to a flexible and self-reliant lifestyle.
Grazia magazine concludes that the combination of a tropical climate, coastal scenery, affordable living costs, and relatively comprehensive urban services is making Da Nang an increasingly appealing option for French retirees looking to change their living environment.
