Foreign tourists join locals in cooking free meals for Hoi An flood victims
DNO - The Sabirama restaurant in Hoi An has mobilized its staff, relatives, and even foreign tourists to cook more than 400 free meal boxes for residents in areas severely affected by flooding.
The meals were delivered directly by volunteers wading through submerged streets to reach isolated households.
Mr. Truong Van Quy, owner of Sabirama Restaurant, said his own business was also badly flooded but still “much luckier than many others”.
“I just want to share a part of the hardship with local people during this disaster, and give them some hope and strength to get through it,” Quy said.
A day earlier, on October 28, Quy had already opened his accommodation facilities to shelter those who had been evacuated from floodwaters in Hoi An, offering them food and lodging free of charge.
The same spirit of solidarity spread across Hoi An ancient town. On the morning of October 29, Hoi An Electric Car Company, Phuc An Electric Car Company, and Kim Dong Shop prepared 130 meal sets, including sticky rice cakes and bottled water, for residents of Nam Dieu Pottery Village in Hoi An Tay Ward.
The previous day, the two electric car firms had also delivered more than 100 servings of mi Quang noodles and drinking water to villagers trapped by rising waters.
As flood levels exceeded the city’s highest warning mark, these efforts - from restaurant owners to visiting foreigners - reflected Hoi An’s enduring sense of compassion and resilience in the face of natural disasters.
