Da Nang students reimagine Japan’s gyudon beef bowls
DNO - Da Nang University of Foreign Language Studies has hosted the “Matsuya Bowl Challenge 2025,” where students showcased their creativity with Japan’s signature gyudon beef bowl.

On October 4, the Faculty of Japanese Language and Culture organized the final round of the contest, selecting 8 outstanding teams from Central and Central Highlands universities.
The competition aimed to foster cross-cultural exchange, spark student passion for Japanese gastronomy, and strengthen Vietnam–Japan friendship.
At the event, students were challenged to design and decorate bowls of gyudon, a staple dish of Japanese cuisine.
Beyond its culinary appeal, the contest highlighted aesthetics, creativity and design thinking, allowing participants to explore how food presentation can be transformed into a form of cultural storytelling.
The challenge was also designed to deepen students’ knowledge of Japanese food culture while encouraging them to apply ideas in real-life contexts.
The event further emphasized the university’s commitment to innovative teaching methods, extracurricular activities and international cooperation.

By bringing together students, educators and businesses, the Matsuya Bowl Challenge not only created a platform for learning and experimentation but also promoted cultural diplomacy through cuisine.
According to the organizing committee, the competition reflects broader efforts to expand collaboration between academia and industry while reinforcing the cultural bridge between Vietnam and Japan.
With its blend of education, creativity, and cultural appreciation, the Matsuya Bowl Challenge 2025 showed how a simple dish like gyudon can spark innovation and strengthen international friendship on campus.
