The Legend of “Lady Ginseng”

For the Sedang people, Ngoc Linh ginseng is deeply rooted in an ancient tale. According to the legend, a Sedang girl sacrificed herself by transforming into a healing plant in order to save her sick father.

From that time on, the plant was regarded as a sacred gift of the mountains and came to be known as Ngoc Linh ginseng. Once merely a folk legend, Ngoc Linh ginseng has become a source of prosperity, lifting many Sedang families out of poverty and earning the name “fairy ginseng” for its life-changing power.

From folklore to aspiration

Tra Linh is now home to famous ginseng gardens. Once a hardship crop for forest dwellers, Ngoc Linh ginseng has made many families prosperous and stands as a symbol of resilience and aspiration.

With 7,300 hectares of forest and an ideal climate, Tra Linh produces around 100 tons of ginseng each year.

The commune plans to become Central Vietnam’s hub for medicinal herbs by building a biopharmaceutical park, expanding plantations, linking farmers with businesses, and protecting the forest. Eco-tourism, fairs, and festivals will further showcase ginseng while preserving Sedang traditions.

Backed by local determination and city support, Tra Linh is turning the legend of “Lady Ginseng” into a powerful symbol of culture and economy, aiming to establish Ngoc Linh as the medicinal hub of Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.
