DNO - Da Nang’s great efforts and positive results in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing has been the basis for the city to contribute to the whole country’s efforts to have the European Commission (EC)'s IUU “yellow card” against seafood exports from Vietnam removed.

Recently, the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment has worked with functional agencies to monitor and supervise all activities of local fishing vessels at sea through the Vessel Monitoring System (VMS).

So far, 1,188 out of the 1,190 fishing vessels in the city have been equipped with VMS devices, accounting for 99.83% of the total.

The department has coordinated with localities to organize training sessions for fishermen, with focus on the Fisheries Law, regulations on combating IUU, and some provisions of the Penal Code on criminal prosecution for acts related to illegal trading and transportation of aquatic products according to Resolution No. 04 dated June 12, 2024 of the Supreme People's Court Council of Judges.

Also, local authorities have been tasked with monitoring vessels operating near maritime boundaries and coordinating with border guards to handle incidents at sea.

Unregistered or non-operational vessels will be tightly controlled, with measures such as sealing equipment and publicly listing owners.

Da Nang has recorded no fishing vessels and fishermen violating foreign waters since the beginning of 2024.
