Biotechnology to be a key economic sector in Da Nang
(QNO) - The Da Nang Biotechnology Center will be developed into a research hub for biotechnology which will become a key economic sector after the merger of Da Nang and Quang Nam.
The Da Nang Biotechnology Center, the first of its kind in the country, initially focused on urban agriculture. Since 2020, it has launched 10 scientific models, supporting local livelihoods. The centre now backs 10 startups, manages 18 research contracts, transfers 5 technology processes, and focuses on molecular biotechnology, disease diagnosis, traceability, and environmental treatment.
Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee Nguyen Van Quang praised the Biotechnology Centre's achievements during its 14-year history.
Despite lacking labs, the center has commercialised products that benefit local businesses. It is now expanding to support research needs for the Central Coastal region.
Mr. Quang proposed developing the centre as a park to inspire research. The Da Nang-Quang Nam merger will offer vast potential for biotechnology, particularly in forests and seas.
The centre will focus on building labs for molecular biology, enhancing partnerships, and collaborating with businesses to commercialise products, with guidance from the Department of Science and Technology on cooperation and attracting skilled researchers.
Mr. Quang emphasised that the centre’s development should align with Da Nang’s new direction, focusing on the south. The goal is to make it a research hub and a key biotechnology sector, supporting the development of science, technology, and digital transformation
