New discoveries at My Son Sanctuary during excavation

(QNO) - For over two weeks, Dr Patrizia Zolese, an archaeologist and director of the C.M. Lerici Foundation (Italy), has been working at Tower Group L of the My Son Sanctuary in Duy Phu (Duy Xuyen, Quang Nam) from early to late every day.

Dr Patrizia Zolese, working alongside Vietnamese and Italian experts and skilled workers, oversees the careful excavation and cleaning of collapsed towers in Tower Group L.

The goal is to uncover evidence that can guide the accurate restoration of this group, which shows structural and architectural differences from other parts of the site and from other Cham temples.

Their initial findings provided evidence that Group L was a significant ceremonial space, possibly used by kings and Brahmanical classes. Its unique design, including a two-tier roof from the early 15th century, hints at many more mysteries to uncover.

Leaders from the My Son Heritage Management Board and Indian experts regularly inspect the work. The focus is on preserving the original values of the site while reinforcing foundations buried deep underground.

In addition, efforts are underway to restore Tower Groups E and F, which consist of eight and three structures, respectively.

Initial excavations reveal these were built using bricks, wood, and tiles, with construction techniques that aim to conserve the site's authenticity.

New discoveries in the current excavation that these structures date back to very early periods and reflect the worship of Shiva, as well as cultural exchanges between the Champa dynasty and ancient countries in the region.

Due to deterioration over time, urgent conservation is necessary to protect these invaluable relics.

The coordinated efforts of Vietnamese and Indian experts aim to preserve My Son’s outstanding cultural heritage for future generations.
