(QNO) - With hard work and skilled hands, the women in Dang village (Tay Giang, Quang Nam province) have turned traditional brocade into commercial products, supporting daily life, promoting tourism, and preserving Co Tu cultural values.
Co Tu women have long practiced weaving, primarily for family use during festivals. Recently, the craft has declined as younger generations lose interest.
In 2023, the Tay Giang Women's Union launched a program in Dang village to preserve and develop brocade weaving, focusing on self-reliance and mutual support to create livelihoods and reduce poverty.
31 Co Tu women have currently joined a brocade weaving cooperative in Tay Giang, contributing funds for materials like weaving frames and yarn.
The Women's Union promotes these products by encouraging locals to wear traditional clothes and collaborating with tourism sites to showcase items like dresses and wallets.
This initiative helps make brocade more marketable, preserves Co Tu culture, and provides extra income for members. The cooperative also fosters creativity while maintaining traditional craftsmanship, with each product requiring considerable time and effort to complete.
While synthetic yarn can replace natural fibres, the process still requires skill to ensure durability. Brocade weaving reflects Co Tu women's craftsmanship, with items like jackets or skirts taking weeks or months to complete.
According to Alang Thi Lu (from Tul village), the cooperative provides extra income and helps preserve the craft. She hopes young people will embrace brocade and continue the tradition.
Most skilled weavers in Tay Giang are older, but 30% of local youth are learning the craft. The Women's Union and Dang Commune are working to promote Co Tu brocade products.
