DNO - Located just 10 kilometers southwest of downtown Da Nang, Phong Nam Ancient Village sits quietly along the banks of the Yen River, preserving the timeless essence of a traditional countryside.
Covering an area of more than 1.6 square kilometers, the village has stood for over 500 years and remains one of the best-preserved rural heritage sites in central Vietnam.
Historically known as Phong Le Village, Phong Nam was first established in 1404 during the Ho Dynasty. Despite the city’s rapid growth, the village retains many features of old Vietnamese rural life: moss-covered communal houses, rice fields, banyan trees beside ancient village gates, green bamboo hedges lining quiet lanes, stone wells, and folk religious structures.
In March 2025, local authorities announced a plan for the development of Phong Nam Cultural Tourism Village as part of Da Nang’s long-term rural revitalization efforts. Phong Nam and Bo Ban Village (in Hoa Vang Commune) have been selected for a pilot program to develop “distinctive cultural villages” through 2030, with a vision extending to 2045.
The total investment for the project is expected to exceed VND 89 billion, including more than VND 75 billion allocated to Phong Nam alone. The plan aims to preserve cultural identity, improve local living standards, and promote sustainable tourism in line with Vietnam’s “advanced new-style rural commune” standards.
As Da Nang positions itself as both a smart city and a guardian of heritage, Phong Nam stands out as a model of how history, culture, and community can shape sustainable rural tourism.
