DNO - On September 29, Chairman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Nguyen Manh Hung met with Mr. JoeBen Bevirt, founder, CEO and chief architect of US-based Joby Aviation, to discuss potential investment in electric aircraft manufacturing and clean energy.
Mr. JoeBen Bevirt said the purpose of the visit was to explore opportunities to manufacture electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and equipment for new and clean energy industries.
He highlighted the development potential of Da Nang, the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone (OEZ) and Chu Lai Airport, outlining two possible investment projects.
The first is an aircraft manufacturing facility, with the company considering a location within an airport area. Chu Lai Airport is among the sites attracting particular interest.
The second concerns new renewable energy technology which will require equipment and infrastructure to transport, handle and load equipment systems directly onto vessels. Joby Aviation is therefore also seeking a suitable site for a shipbuilding facility to support the project.
In reply, Chairman Nguyen Manh Hung said Da Nang was ready to help the company assess investment opportunities and identify suitable locations. Following its administrative merger, the city has expanded its infrastructure, available land and development potential, he added.
He highlighted Da Nang’s strategic position on national and international transport routes and its role as a regional logistics gateway through the East-West Economic Corridor, seaports and airports.
The city has two airports and four seaports. Its investment assets also include the Hi-Tech Park, Free Trade Zone, Chu Lai OEZ, and International Financial Centre, alongside industrial parks and digital technology zones being developed.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung said Joby Aviation’s proposed investment areas matched the city’s priorities, particularly high-tech industry, aviation, innovation, new energy and green technology.
Da Nang is now developing substantial industrial land reserves and offering land, tax and investment support incentives for projects meeting regulatory requirements. These measures are intended to help high-tech investors select suitable sites and implement projects.
The Da Nang leader assigned People’s Committee Vice Chairman Phan Thai Binh to oversee support for Joby Aviation’s investment exploration.
He also directed Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang, head of the Chu Lai OEZ Authority, to assist with site surveys, investment requirements and administrative procedures.
