The ranking was compiled using hundreds of thousands of traveller reviews and ratings from walking tours conducted across the globe.

According to GuruWalk, the assessment combined visitor volume with customer satisfaction, highlighting destinations that offer immersive and enjoyable pedestrian experiences.

Hoi An’s appearance on the list reflects the growing global demand for sustainable and slow-travel tourism, where visitors prioritize authentic cultural experiences and deeper connections with local communities rather than fast-paced sightseeing.

Also included in the 2026 ranking are Ha Noi in the 37th place and Ho Chi Minh City in the 38th place.

The results underline the increasing international recognition of Vietnamese urban destinations within the global tourism market.

Recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site, Hoi An is widely known for its remarkably preserved ancient town, pedestrian-friendly streets and distinctive architectural identity shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.

The city’s compact layout allows visitors to comfortably discover historical landmarks, traditional houses, assembly halls and riverside attractions by walking.

In addition to its architecture, Hoi An offers travelers opportunities to experience local cuisine, traditional crafts and everyday life at a slower pace.

Lantern-lit streets, local markets and cultural performances contribute to the city’s reputation as one of Asia’s most atmospheric heritage destinations.

The recognition also aligns with broader global tourism trends favouring environmentally conscious travel. Walking tourism is increasingly viewed as a sustainable way to reduce environmental impact while encouraging closer engagement with local culture and communities.

According to GuruWalk, the top 10 cities in the 2026 ranking are Rome, Madrid, Budapest, Prague, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Porto, Barcelona, London and Berlin.

The latest recognition is expected to further strengthen Hoi An’s image as one of Southeast Asia’s leading heritage tourism destinations.
