Potential of river tourism
The Co Co River - Hoi An Tay Festival 2026 just taking place attracted a large number of local people and international tourists.
The artistic program "The Co Co River: Past, Present, and Aspirations for the Future," featuring river excursions accompanied by music, fishing-net throwing, and a rural market showcasing local specialties like Tra Que vegetables and An Bang seafood, was one of the highlights during the festival. It helped to revitalize the tourism appeal of this heritage river in the Quang land.
Mr. Pramanik Shashi Kant (an Indian national) and his wife, Ms. Cao Thi Thanh Tam, who have been living in Vietnam for 11 years and recently settled in Hoi An two months ago, were thrilled to immerse themselves in the festival. Pramanik Shashi Kant shared that they were happy to attend this festival. They were truly amazed by everything, from the food and folk games to the music. All enjoyed such a wonderful atmosphere.
According to the festival's organizers, the festival opens up opportunities for a strong revival of the Co Co River, aiming to turn the river into an attractive destination that harmoniously blends cultural, tourism, and community values.
Leader of Hoi An Tay Ward, Bui Van Dung, emphasized that the festival honored the historical, cultural, and ecological significance of the Co Co River. This waterway served as a vital trade route connecting Da Nang and Hoi An between the 16th and 18th centuries, thereby playing an important role in the development of the Hoi An trading port in the past.
The festival also helped showcase the potential and advantages of Hoi An Tay Ward regarding community-based tourism, ecotourism, and its distinctive cultural heritage. Moreover, the festival's message was aligned with Da Nang City’s tourism stimulus program for 2026: “Return to Origin." The accessible and simple tourism experiences will bring visitors back to rustic, true values.
Unlocking the journey to green tourism
Before the festival, the Co Co River already owned significant potential for local economic growth and green tourism, notably the Tra Que Vegetable Village and the Thanh Ha Pottery Village. The Co Co River, with its role attached to the development of Hoi An Ancient Town, has been identified as a "key" for green tourism development by local authorities.
Located along the river, the Tra Que Vegetable Village has emerged as a typical model of agro-tourism and rural tourism in Da Nang City, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year.
Local experiences, such as being a farmer in a day or enjoying the renowned flavors of Tra Que’s fresh vegetables, always captivate visitors. The Tra Que Vegetable Village was recognized as a "Best Tourism Village in the World 2024" by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Not far away, the Thanh Ha Pottery Village was also honored as the "Best Community-Based Tourism Destination in 2025" by Vietnam's Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, thanks to this village's outstanding cultural and scenic values and strong sense of community cohesion.
Director of Wide Eyed Tours, Luong Thuy Ha, noted that the area within a 3-5 km radius of Hoi An Ancient Town boasts numerous picturesque riverside fishing villages with immense tourism potential.
Therefore, developing festival spaces and tourism products along the Co Co River will bring a new aspect for local development. This not only encourages local residents to engage in tourism but also helps promote a scenic waterway route that complements Hoi An’s tranquil atmosphere, offering a green "breathing space" amidst the pace of modern life.
