Building from the ground up

With a natural area of over 15,800 hectares, including more than 9,600 hectares of forest, Tra Linh Commune is regarded as the capital of Ngoc Linh ginseng in the mountainous region of Da Nang City.

The locality currently has 35 household groups and 14 enterprises cultivating more than 685 hectares, planting over 4 million seedlings annually and developing concentrated high-value medicinal crop zones.

According to local authorities, developing Ngoc Linh ginseng and medicinal herbs is a strategic priority linked to forest protection and livelihood improvement, with a focus on sustainable, science-based development and genetic conservation.

Tra Linh Commune is currently reorganising production through stronger linkages, planned cultivation zoning and greater application of science and technology in breeding, cultivation and processing.

Efforts are also focused on standardising growing areas, assigning cultivation codes, and establishing traceability and origin certification systems to enhance product value and competitiveness.

At a recent seminar marking 65 years of medicinal plant development, the commune signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Institute of Medicinal Materials to advance research, conservation and development.

The partnership targets Ngoc Linh ginseng genetic conservation, variety breeding and testing, GACP-WHO standardisation, traceability systems, technology transfer, post-harvest processing, compound extraction, product diversification and technical training for local farmers.

Bringing ginseng to the city

Beyond the Ngoc Linh ginseng fair in mountainous areas, Da Nang has approved another monthly fair for Ngoc Linh ginseng in An Hai Ward to bring the product closer to residents and tourists, boost trade promotion and raise awareness.

The municipal Department of Industry and Trade will oversee implementation to ensure effectiveness and a distinct local identity, with the programme set to launch in 2026 and continue based on evaluation.

The city has also approved the “Journey of the National Treasure Ngoc Linh Ginseng” programme, featuring an experiential space for ginseng and medicinal herbs, with the Da Nang International Ginseng and Medicinal Herbs Festival 2026 as a highlight.

The monthly fair, to be held at An Hai Night Market on the second weekend of each month from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., will host 15–20 booths offering fresh ginseng and local medicinal products such as Tra My cinnamon, codonopsis, Anoectochilus orchids and forest honey, alongside processing demonstrations and interactive activities.

Additional attractions include promotional spaces, gong performances and hands-on experiences, such as identifying genuine ginseng and exploring its cultivation and origins. The fair is expected to draw around 5,000 visitors per night, helping boost trade and elevate the value of mountainous specialities.
