(ĐNO) - Cu Lao Cham, part of Hoi An (Da Nang city), is famous not only for its beautiful landscapes and biodiversity but also for the local strong environmental awareness.

Locals have followed a no-plastic-bag model for years, working with authorities to keep the islands clean and green.

Cu Lao Cham is home to rich ecosystems, including forests, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine life, with over 1,000 species on land and 1,300 marine species, many of which are endangered. In 2009, UNESCO recognised it as the core zone of the Cu Lao Cham-Hoi A World Biosphere Reserve.

To protect marine resources, coral reef restoration has been underway. Over 1 hectare of coral has been replanted, with excellent recovery results thanks to both experts and locals participating. The Bac beach has returned to its natural beauty of decades ago.

Cu Lao Cham has nearly 3,000 residents, but visitors outnumber locals two to one during peak season. Tourism boosts the economy but also pressures the environment.

To reduce impact, strict rules ban plastic bags and regulate diving activities. Snorkelling is allowed only in designated, monitored areas.

Illegal fishing is strictly controlled. Patrol teams work with border guards to monitor activities, protect biodiversity, and educate both fishermen and tourists on environmental responsibility. Rock crab harvesting is tightly regulated to prevent overexploitation.

The local economy has shifted toward sustainability, with fishing reduced from 90% to 60% of livelihoods, while tourism services account for 40%.

Border Guards also support environmental efforts, from patrols to clean-up activities, and promote alternatives to plastic bags. Today, locals use woven bags or almond leaves to wrap goods. Both residents and tourists contribute to keeping Cu Lao Cham green.

These combined efforts help preserve the islands’ natural beauty, protect ecosystems, and promote sustainable economic development.
