EcoQuest - Green startup project developing Viet Nam’s bamboo industry

DNO - A start-up project called "EcoQuest - Green Mission", being incubated in Da Nang’s Huong Tra Ward, promises to open up multi-benefit opportunities of bamboo from exports to ecological conservation.

The idea of building a closed-loop model from planting, production, and commercialization of bamboo-based products was initiated by 42-year-old Vo Phan Van Thanh, who is residing in Ngoc Bich Village, Huong Tra Ward.

"Markets in Europe, South Korea, the US, India and the Netherlands all have a long-standing demand for bamboo products. Previously, they mainly imported these products from China. But from 2025 onward, supply chains have been shifting strongly to Southeast Asia, including Vietnam. This presents a great opportunity but also a challenge as Vietnam heavily relies on wild bamboo which lacks consistent quality and scale” Mr. Thanh explained.

After many research trips, he discovered that the guadua angustifolia bamboo (iron bamboo) - a rhizome-type species originating from South America - is being successfully grown in Prachin Buri Province, Thailand which shares the similar climate with Central Vietnam.

This bamboo species has superior biological characteristics with a height of 20-25m, large diameter, fast growth, good wind resistance and soil-retention properties, which helps retain soil and prevent erosion, and is suitable for forest restoration and Net Zero programs.

The raw bamboo market abroad is developing well, with high demand for supply.

Mr. Thanh has piloted planting more than 10 bamboo varieties on an area of 4,000m² in his home garden. After 2 years of selection, he retains only high-performing species, including guadua angustifolia bamboo, and queen bamboo - a long-stemmed bamboo species with a fast growth rate.

Based on the initial results, Mr. Thanh has carried out the "EcoQuest - Green Mission" project with the aim to develop raw bamboo growing areas, and build a processing factory and a production facility for handicrafts, consumer goods and construction materials. I

n addition, he has organized ecotourism experiences tied to the bamboo gardens; and designed community education programs on environmental protection, climate change, and renewable energy.

Currently, the project is being expanded in many regions such as Central Highlands and Northern Viet Nam. Meanwhile, Huong Tra Ward is the core area for bamboo seedling production for the project. Up to now, the project is still in the final stage, and seeking investors.

“If supported properly and joined by both investors and policymakers, Mr. Thanh’s project could become a model for building a bamboo-based ecosystem in Central Vietnam - a region with ideal climate, terrain, and agricultural labor,” said Mr. Ngo Tan Thien - environmental expert of CTC Global.
