DNO - Da Nang will host the 2026 World Traditional Wooden Racket Table Tennis Championship, bringing the distinctive competition to the city for the first time.

This much-awaited event is scheduled for December at Tien Son Sports Arena in Hoa Cuong Ward, Da Nang, according to the municipal Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Unlike modern table tennis, which relies heavily on high-speed shots and heavy spin, this tournament uses traditional wooden rackets, a type of equipment associated with the early development of the sport.
The wooden racket produces slower shots and less spin, placing greater emphasis on tactical play, consistency, endurance and ball control.
The distinctive format offers players and spectators a different take on table tennis, highlighting skills that can be less visible in the modern game.
Hosting the world-level tournament is expected to further strengthen Da Nang’s reputation as an international sports destination. The city’s sports infrastructure and experience in staging major competitions were among the factors supporting its selection as the host.
The championship will also add another international event to Da Nang’s growing sports calendar, helping diversify the range of sporting competitions held in the city.
Since the beginning of 2026, Da Nang has successfully hosted several major international sporting events, including Heineken Pickleball World Cup 2026 and Beach Wrestling World Championships 2026.
The arrival of the traditional wooden-racket competition is expected to create a new opportunity for international athletes and fans to discover Da Nang, while adding a distinctive sporting experience to the city’s year-end events.
With its slower pace, tactical demands and traditional equipment, the championship could also introduce a wider international audience to an early form of table tennis and showcase how historic sporting practices can find a place in contemporary international competition.
