The statement was made by UNESCO Representative to Vietnam Jonathan Wallace Baker during his meeting with Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Ho Ky Minh on Friday.

He added that UNESCO showed a keen interest in cooperation with the central coastal city, focusing on four main areas: culture and heritage, education, environment, science and technology, and AI.

For his part, Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh briefed Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker on Da Nang’s socio-economic development achievements.

In particular, the city’s GRDP growth rate in the first quarter of 2026 increased by 8.45% compared to the same period last year. The size of the economy reached VND 75,594 billion, whilst the local total import and export turnover generated US$ 2,240 million.

During that period, the city attracted VND 58,496 billion in domestic investment and US$ 37.47 million in FDI.

Along with the attractiveness of events and tourism services in the city center, popular destinations such as Hoi An, My Son Sanctuary, Marble Mountains, and Cu Lao Cham continue to demonstrate their appeal thanks to a harmonious combination of cultural and historical values and modern experiences, including marine sports, recreational activities, ecotourism and cuisine.

The city leader informed that Da Nang is now home to numerous UNESCO-recognized heritage sites, including the ancient town of Hoi An and the My Son Sanctuary.

Also, the Cham Islands was recognized as the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2009, the Bai Choi in Central Viet Nam as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017, and ‘Ma Nhai’ (Inscriptions) at the Marble Mountains as a documentary heritage in the Asia-Pacific region in 2022.

At the end of 2023, Hoi An was officially designated by UNESCO as a “Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art”.

The recognition reflects the historical depth and cultural diversity of central Viet Nam.

Therefore, the city hoped for deeper cooperation with UNESCO in the near future, especially in organizing events to mark the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to UNESCO in 2026.

With experience in successfully organizing global-scale events such as the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week 2017 and the 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG-5), along with its international-standard tourism and conference infrastructure system, Da Nang fully meets all requirements in terms of facilities and professional human resources for organizing international events.

Therefore, Vice Chairman Minh voiced his hope that Da Nang will continue receiving the attention, support, and partnership of UNESCO so that the cooperation initiatives deliver practical results in line with the local sustainable development orientation.
