DNO - In the mountainous district of Tra My, Da Nang, Bui Van Liu, a young Muong entrepreneur, is reviving bamboo and rattan weaving craft, and turning it into a sustainable cultural tourism initiative.
Nearly 40 years ago, Muong families resettled in Tra My, bringing with them ancestral traditions, including the intricate art of hand-weaving household items like trays, baskets, and carrying frames. Over time, the practice faded until Liu stepped in.
In 2024, Liu launched a project titled ‘Preserving and Promoting Cultural Values through Bamboo Craft’, aiming to keep the tradition alive while creating livelihoods for his community.
His initiative brings together artisans young and old, divided into specialized teams focused on design, weaving, motif research and marketing.
Products are now treated to prevent mold, thoughtfully packaged, and sold at local fairs and souvenir shops in Da Nang and Hoi An.
The project also integrates hands-on tourism experiences. Visitors to Liu’s stilt-house workshop can learn to split bamboo, weave simple items and engage with Muong culture firsthand. “Each product takes time and care. But it carries both utility and soul”, said Liu.
His model earned recognition at the 2025 Quang Nam Startup Talent Search and is helping awaken a sleeping cultural heritage while empowering a new generation of Muong artisans to carry it forward.
