DNO - Da Nang has officially launched preparations for one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects, an underground tunnel beneath the Da Nang International Airport, aimed at easing traffic congestion and boosting the city’s long-term growth.

With an estimated investment of VND 10 trillion (approximately US$400 million), the project has begun with a consultancy package to develop the pre-feasibility study, expected to be submitted to the municipal People’s Committee in the third quarter of 2025.

At present, the city’s main arteries connecting downtown with the airport and western districts, including Nguyen Van Linh, Nguyen Tri Phuong and Duy Tan streets, are frequently overloaded during peak hours.

The proposed tunnel is expected to shorten travel times, relieve pressure on major intersections and ensure smoother circulation across the urban core.

Transport experts note that the project could mark a breakthrough in connectivity, making it more convenient for visitors to travel from the airport to coastal resorts, while also facilitating trade and logistics activities.

In addition to transportation benefits, the tunnel will serve as a catalyst for more coordinated urban planning and a more modern city layout.

Da Nang authorities are also exploring the integration of the tunnel project with future mass rapid transit (MRT) development, signaling a long-term vision to encourage public transport use and reduce reliance on private vehicles.

If implemented on schedule, the airport tunnel would address one of Da Nang’s biggest traffic bottlenecks and serve as a strategic lever to enhance regional and international connectivity.

The project is also part of the city’s broader efforts to realize Resolution 43-NQ/TW of the Politburo, which sets a roadmap for Da Nang to become a dynamic urban hub and a leading center for finance, tourism, and logistics by 2030, with a vision toward 2045.
