Da Nang hosts regional dialogue on biodiversity finance

DNO - More than 120 biodiversity finance experts and government representatives from Europe, Asia, and the Pacific gathered in Da Nang on Tuesday for one of the region’s largest-ever exchanges on biodiversity finance.

The 11th Eurasia - Pacific Regional Dialogue on Biodiversity Finance, one of the region’s largest-ever exchanges on biodiversity finance, opened in Da Nang on Tuesday.

It was jointly organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative (BIOFIN) and the Government of Viet Nam.

In his opening speech at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Quoc Tri affirmed that Vietnam always placed sustainable development associated with nature conservation and biodiversity among its top national priorities.

“We attach special importance to cooperation with international organizations, including UNDP and development partners, to share knowledge and experience, and mobilize resources for nature conservation and sustainable development” he added.

He emphasized the event was a valuable opportunity to discuss, share and launch new initiatives to promote biodiversity finance, thereby contributing to the successful implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Da Nang Tran Nam Hung expressed that hosting the 11th Eurasia - Pacific Regional Dialogue on Biodiversity Finance is a valuable opportunity for the city to introduce its natural, cultural, and human values. At the same time, it will help the city connect with other countries and international organizations in joint efforts for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

He affirmed that the city’s commitment to work with the Government of Vietnam and the international community to effectively implement conservation initiatives, adapt to climate change and promote sustainable, inclusive and responsible development models.

Ms. Ramla Khalidi, UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam, said that over the past decades, UNDP has cooperated with Vietnam to protect biodiversity, reduce climate risks and promote sustainable development.

She stated that UNDP is always strongly committed to mobilizing resources and bringing solutions for people and nature.

She noted UNDP looked forward to continuing to work with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and local partners to boost more ambitious biodiversity finance agendas, contributing to the implementation of global and national biodiversity goals, including the BIOFIN initiative.
