DNO - Da Nang in central Vietnam is positioning itself as a regional hub for innovative startups in emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and Web3.
At SURF 2025, the city’s flagship innovation startup festival held on July 30, international experts and investors convened to discuss opportunities and challenges in fostering a dynamic startup ecosystem.
At the forum ‘Da Nang – A Springboard for Blockchain Unicorns’, Jonah Lau, the Head of Incubation at Animoca Brands in Hong Kong (China), praised the city’s openness and ambition, calling it an ideal destination to attract and nurture tech talent.
He emphasised that while AI may transform the workforce, human capital remains the key driver of innovation, and also highlighted the importance of market targeting and product distribution strategies for any startup.
Metis CEO Tom Ngo noted that early-stage startups face high failure rates, making government support critical. He commended Da Nang’s proactive role in bridging startups with researchers and regulatory bodies. For the time being, the city is especially encouraging pilots of frontier technologies like blockchain through a sandbox approach.
Alexis Low, the APAC Regional Manager of Lisk Investment Fund, expressed hope that Da Nang could become a regional pioneer in Web3. This expert stressed the need for stable regulatory frameworks tailored to the technical diversity of blockchain platforms.
Vietnamese tech leaders echoed the importance of adopting cutting-edge technologies to drive digital transformation.
According to Vo Duc Anh, the Deputy Director of the Da Nang Innovation Startup Support Centre, the city has enacted over 30 incentive policie, including tax breaks, land rent support and shared infrastructure, all designed to fuel the next wave of Vietnamese tech unicorns.
