Minimizing and recycling industrial waste
A lot of enterprises in Da Nang, in recent years, have started a green transition by minimizing generated waste, and sorting and separating general waste from hazardous waste.
In addition, they are separating recyclable industrial solid waste and enhancing recycling capacity while fulfilling Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This includes managing, collecting, recycling, or treating waste associated with products and packaging after disposal by consumers.
At the Da Nang Rubber Joint Stock Company (DRC) in Hai Van Ward, alongside the closed-loop sorting and compliant transfer of nearly 55 tons of hazardous waste annually, the company minimizes the generation of ordinary industrial waste (650 m³/year) and domestic waste (600 m³/year).
It also sets a target of 100% internal recycling for scrap cord fabric to achieve 109.4 tons by 2025. This aims to bring recycled waste back into production.
The company, moreover, has fulfilled Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations for over 2,022 tons of products and packaging, achieving a used-tire recycling capacity of up to 110,000 tires annually.
The company’s greenhouse gas emissions were sharply reduced by 22% over four years, equivalent to a reduction of more than 12,700 tons of CO2. This results from fuel transition, rooftop solar power systems, and the optimization of production processes.
Mr. Nguyen Van Doan, Head of the Occupational Safety Department at DRC, said his company plans to reduce electricity consumption by 2% annually by 2030 and achieve a renewable energy share of 5 - 10% of the plant's total energy consumption. Concurrently, it targets a 1 - 2% annual reduction in raw material waste.
The Hoa Khanh Industrial Park based in Lien Chieu Ward was established 30 years ago. However, the eco-industrial park criteria and cleaner products applied in recent years have helped the park’s environmental improvement.
Mrs. Doan Thi Ngoc Thuy, Deputy Head of the Construction and Environment Division at the Da Nang Specific Economic Zones Authority (DSEZA), reported that more than 30% of the businesses in the Hoa Khanh Industrial Zone have recently implemented a set of measures to reduce resource consumption and emissions during the production process while promoting Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RCEP).
Accordingly, enterprises in Da Nang have currently implemented 228 solutions. These include 127 on electricity savings, 31 on raw materials and chemical savings, 31 on water conservation, 33 on fuel savings, 3 on environmental impact minimization, and 3 other savings measures. Additionally, six industrial symbiosis measures have been carried out.

These above initiatives have enabled Da Nang enterprises to save over VND 14 trillion and reduce wastewater discharge by 50,000 m³, CO2-equivalent emissions by 7,000 tonnes and generated waste by 2,700 tonnes per year.
The achievements mentioned above indicate that shifting mindsets regarding the management of resources, waste, and greenhouse gas emissions, alongside practices such as recycling, reuse, industrial symbiosis, and alternative fuels and energy, are highly effective for the green transition of businesses.
Mr. Tran Dinh Tuan, Deputy Head of the Industrial Management Division at the Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade, affirmed that the city has promoted cleaner production and the circular economy among enterprises in the locality to ensure the efficient use of resources and energy while reducing emissions in recent years.
