ĐNO - The distinctive pull of Quang land’s international trade legacy has endured for centuries, transitioning from the international trading hub of Hoi An to the Da Nang international financial centre.

The mission of a pioneering land
Hoi An emerged early as a major international trade hub, peaking from the late 16th to early 18th century as the main port of Dang Trong (the Inner Region). Through coastal, transoceanic, and overland trade routes, it secured a strong position on regional and global maps.
Today, Da Nang, one of only two Vietnamese cities designated to engage in the global financial arena, carries forward that legacy, reflecting similar ambitions as an international gateway.
Centuries later, beyond modern air links, Da Nang has inherited and expanded Faifo’s historic role as a regional gateway. As the eastern terminus of the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC), and with its deep-water ports being upgraded, the city is set to strengthen its role as a key bridge between Vietnam and global markets.

A perspective between two centres
Mr Tran Anh from the Hoi An Historical Science Association said that Hoi An’s residents were historically adaptable and entrepreneurial, capitalising on the town’s role as an international trading hub, such as renting houses to foreign merchants, developing culinary services, and innovating in packaging and preserving goods such as cinnamon, areca nuts, fish maw, and bird’s nest for long sea voyages.
Today, similar parallels can be seen in Da Nang’s development strategy. As one of Vietnam’s two designated international financial centres, the city is planning international-standard urban spaces and calling on businesses to innovate in tourism, trade, and logistics to maximise value creation.

Since announcing the establishment of the Da Nang International Financial Centres in late 2025, the city has launched training programmes for officials and reached out to overseas Vietnamese experts to strengthen human resources.
While the financial centre model is new and its brand still evolving, history shows that the Quang Nam - Da Nang region once thrived as a global trading hub, offering confidence in its capacity to shape a new economic chapter.
