DNO - After the recent merger with former Quang Nam Province, the new city of Da Nang has great advantages to continue developing marathon events, thereby creating attractive sports playgrounds associated with tourism development.
Marathons are gaining significant interest from running lovers. In Da Nang, many marathon events are held annually, making the city an inviting destination for running enthusiasts.
For example, the recent VnExpress Marathon Da Nang 2025 attracted 11,000 participants.
In March, the 2025 Da Nang International Marathon celebrated its 12th edition, featuring over 7,000 participants, including nearly 3,000 international athletes from 72 countries and territories worldwide. The figure marked the highest number of international runners in the marathon's 12-year history and represented a 45% increase compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, the IRONMAN competition held in early May under the name IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang 2025 marked the 10-year milestone of its presence in Vietnam.
The Son Tra Run 2025 is expected to take place at the end of the year, promising to offer a perfect opportunity for runners to conquer the mountainous roads on the Son Tra Peninsula.
In former Quang Nam Province, marathon competitions have also flourished in recent years. Some large-scale tournaments have attracted thousands of athletes, including the Quang Nam Marathon, the Tam Ky Discovery Marathon, the Tam Ky Marathon “Journey to the Motherland” 2025, the Half-Marathon "Festival Beach Tam Thanh 2025", and the Nong Son Discovery Marathon.
Thus, if maintained, Da Nang could host nearly 10 Marathons each year.
According to Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Trong Thao, Da Nang boasts some of the most beautiful running routes in Southeast Asia, with participants running along the coast and passing through prominent locations such as the Dragon Bridge, the Han River Bridge, the Son Tra Peninsula, and the Marble Mountains.
These running routes are certified to meet the standards of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), and the World Athletics.
At the same time, the city owns routes full of experiences through many famous landmarks such as the Tam Thanh Mural Village, the Tam Thanh coastal road, the Heroic Vietnamese Mother statue complex, and the Huong Tra eco-tourism village.
"The city will continue to promote these advantages to expand the scale of marathons in order to attract more athletes in the coming time. The city is exploring new routes to diversify the experience for runners. For instance, in the IRONMAN competition, after swimming at the Son Thuy Beach, athletes can cycle and run along the coastal route to south of Hoi An instead of running back to the city center like previous years", noted Mr. Thao.
