DNO - With biometrics and automation, the Da Nang International Airport pioneers digital transformation in passenger travel.
In March 2025, Da Nang became the first airport in Vietnam to operate a fully automated ‘Smart Terminal’ model for international passengers at Terminal T2.
This groundbreaking move streamlines the entire departure process, from check-in and security screening to immigration and boarding, using state-of-the-art technology.
At the core of the upgrade is biometric authentication through Autogate systems, enabling passengers to complete immigration procedures in just one minute.
AI-powered surveillance cameras monitor crowd density and provide intelligent navigation to ease congestion.
Multilingual digital displays enhance access to information for international travelers.
In a major leap toward paperless travel, domestic passengers flying with Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air can now use facial recognition on the VNeID app to complete check-in procedures, eliminating the need for physical documents entirely.
“This marks a major milestone in Vietnam’s aviation modernization,” said Phan Kieu Hung, the Director of the Da Nang International Airport. “We are offering travellers a faster, safer, and smarter airport experience.”, he added.
Importantly, paperless check-in using biometric authentication is only applicable to passengers aged 14 and above.
They are also advised to carry valid identification documents (such as a citizen ID card or passport) as a backup in case of any technical issues with the biometric system.
The transformation is also driving strong growth. In the first half of 2025, the airport served over 7.4 million passengers and handled nearly 45,000 flights. By mid-July, those numbers had surpassed 8.1 million travelers and 49,300 flights.
For two consecutive years (2024 - 2025), the airport has been ranked among the world’s top 100 airports by Skytrax, cementing its reputation as a global gateway and a shining symbol of Vietnam’s dynamic, tech-driven future.
