DNO - Da Nang can be seen as a natural “film studio” and a locality with deep cultural heritage, possessing advantages that few other places can match.
Conditions and challenges
Da Nang offers diverse landscapes within a compact area, allowing filmmakers to move from beaches to mountains such as Ba Na or from deep rivers into the primeval forests of Son Tra in about 30 minutes, providing a clear logistical advantage.
Situated along the heritage axis of Hue - Hoi An - My Son, the city blends modern urban character with the cultural depth of the Quang Land, offering rich material for storytelling.
Its distinctive natural lighting (strong sunlight and clear central Vietnam skies) also creates vibrant colours and strong contrasts, ideal for visually striking film productions.
Hosting the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) strengthens Da Nang’s identity on the regional film map.
Despite its potential, Da Nang’s film and photography sector still faces limitations, including a shortage of skilled professionals, limited access to advanced equipment and studios, and a fragmented market with few large production companies.
The “City as a Studio” model
To develop the “City as a Studio” model, Da Nang should establish a Film Commission acting as a one-stop service connecting authorities and film producers, supporting permits, location access, and filming logistics.
The city could also apply digital technology through an online portal for project registration and location booking, create a Da Nang Film Fund to attract international productions, and introduce Film Officers to assist crews in selecting suitable filming locations.
Artificial intelligence could further support filmmakers by suggesting locations based on scripts and forecasting weather and lighting conditions.
Prioritising digitalisation
Da Nang can strengthen its film industry by digitalising key filming locations through 3D scanning and virtual production. Creating digital models of sites such as Son Tra Peninsula, the Marble Mountains, and Ba Na Hills would allow filmmakers to conduct post-production without remaining on-site.
The city could also build a Digital Location Library with high-resolution images, 360-degree videos, and GPS data of filming sites. In the near term, priority could be given to three clusters: Son Tra Peninsula, the Marble Mountains, and the Han River bridge network, helping attract more international film productions.
