(QNO) - Through traditional rituals, Co Tu people believe the wedding strengthens the bond between families and communities in the highland villages.
The Co Tu people, long settled in central provinces, including Quang Nam, consider their wedding a key cultural tradition, symbolising the union not just of individuals but of families and the community.
These weddings are formal and steeped in tradition, typically held as either a basic ceremony (bhiệc êp) or one with a buffalo sacrifice (bhiệc dal).
Before the wedding, the groom’s family visits the bride’s to ask for her hand and choose an auspicious date.
The ceremony usually takes place at the groom’s house, involving both village communities. Offerings like wine, pigs, chickens, woven fabric, and traditional jewellery are exchanged, each symbolising respect and goodwill.
On the wedding day, the sound of gongs, along with the tan-tung-da-da dance and the colours of brocade, creates a lively atmosphere in the highland communities. The Co Tu wedding is both a personal and a community event where cultural traditions are cherished and preserved.
