DNO - The 47th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Hydro-Meteorological Services is taking place in Da Nang from October 14 - 16.

The event brings together representatives of meteorological and hydrological agencies from ASEAN member states and international organizations. They get involved in discussing joint solutions to the impacts of El Niño and promote digital transformation in the sector.
In her opening remarks at the event, Ms. Dang Thanh Mai, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, noted that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicted in September 2026 that El Niño would intensify and peak by the end of the year. Current El Niño forecast indicators are exceptionally high compared with previous episodes.
In Vietnam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has warned of the risk of severe water shortages, drought and saltwater intrusion in the South Central Coast, Central Highlands and Mekong Delta during the 2026 - 2027 dry season.
The country is currently dealing with natural disasters during the rainy and storm season while preparing for a subsequent period of drought.
Meanwhile, many other ASEAN member states face similar challenges.
For that reason, this year’s annual meeting focuses on the theme: “Strengthening Regional Preparedness and Response to the Impacts of El Niño in ASEAN in 2026 - 2027”.
Featuring experienced experts from the national meteorological and hydrological agencies of ASEAN countries, the WMO, and partners from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea, the meeting is expected to deliver practical outcomes. These efforts aim to strengthen regional capacity for forecasting, early warning and disaster response, as well as mitigating the impacts of El Niño.
The meeting also aims to reinforce solidarity, cooperation and shared responsibility among ASEAN meteorological and hydrological agencies, thereby enhancing the region’s ability to proactively respond to extreme weather and climate events and protect people’s lives and livelihoods.
During the meeting, sub-committee members are reviewing activities during the 2025 - 2026 period and exchanging practical experience in key professional areas, including rainfall forecasting, numerical weather prediction, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and El Niño response scenarios.
Furthermore, participants are discussing ways to expand cooperation with international organizations and development partners, including the WMO, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), to mobilize funding, access advanced technologies and reinforce technical capacity.
The 47th annual meeting serves not only as a prominent academic forum but also as a clear demonstration of ASEAN’s solidarity, proactive approach and timely action in addressing increasingly severe natural disaster challenges.
