(QNO) - The completion of dredging the Ky Ha maritime channel and the launch of the Chu Lai – India international sea route mark a major breakthrough for Chu Lai port and the logistics sector in Central Vietnam.
Led by Truong Hai International Logistics LLC (THILOGI), this project opens up direct export routes to South Asia, helping businesses save on logistics costs and cut shipping times.
After months of work coordinated by THILOGI with support from the Ministry of Construction and Quang Nam authorities, the Ky Ha channel now has a 9.3-meter depth and a 110-meter bottom width. It stretches 11 kilometres.
The upgrade allows Chu Lai port to handle 30,000 DWT vessels, resolving a long-standing bottleneck and positioning the port as a key logistics hub for Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.
Importantly, the improved channel means large ships can dock directly at Chu Lai without relying on traditional transhipment ports like Cat Lai in Ho Chi Minh City or Hai Phong. This streamlines the shipping process for local businesses, reducing both costs and delivery times.
Right after the channel was completed, THILOGI teamed up with Regional Container Lines (RCL) from Thailand to launch the first direct sea route from Central Vietnam to major Indian ports including Kolkata, Chennai, and Mundra.
This new connection meets strong demand in South Asia for Vietnamese exports such as agricultural products, textiles, electronics, and machinery.
Quek Chun Guan, RCL’s Southeast Asia Regional Director, said the new route will shorten transit times, lower logistics costs, and create greater trade opportunities between Vietnam and India. By bypassing northern and southern transhipment hubs, the Chu Lai-India route offers Central Vietnam a faster, more cost-effective link to global markets, a major step forward for the region’s maritime transport.
